What do we think??

Quote: "2 is boring, 4 is confusing, 3 is just right."
Concept: Numbers causing emotional reaction. What is handled best in threes?

In this spread I'm trying to emphasis the text as opposed to the image which was amplified in some of my other compositions.  I think this works best because the idea is simple and the images have enough room to relate to each part of the quote.

Helen Lee: Inspiration

Last year we had a visiting artist named Helen Lee come and talk to us about glass blowing and how she went through a stream of processes and materials all inspiring one another, until she had a font created from glass.  I have thought about her a lot this year and am especially thinking of her now as we create our own typefaces.  I love the idea of using a certain medium and it's attributes to create a typeface.  It adds the personality of the material and can lead to many further experiements, such as Helen did when she used her font on glass business cards.  I think she's so cool.

Classy Type

I'm thinking about doing a serif typeface for our final project in Type II.  I think it's a good challenge because I'm usually inspired to do more modern, geometric typefaces.  I'm not sure exactly how I want to modernize the serif yet but I think it could be an interesting mix if I can make work.

I thought these package designs were really funny and incorporated the sophisticated serif (not Paul Smith), with the concept of cleaner, "perfect" fast food items.  It's not so much what I'm thinking about for my font but these labels alone are good examples of the cleanliness and sophisticated look of a serif font.

Design + Crew = my life, Spring 2010

I love looking at photos of our races and the photographer at Knecht Cup two weeks ago took individual shots of the rowers.  Of course I look at each image like a designer, taking in the angles, contrast and what not. But it's really interesting to see the emotions caught in each image because I know how it feels to be rowing up to the start or in the sprint of a race, and I wonder whether the photographers know that they are capturing much more than just a race.  The thoughts that go through a rowers head in a race are either bazerk and rampaging, or the rower is basically blacked out; the coxswain does all the thinking for you and you just have to think about pushing and the pain.

We're in our last 2 weeks of the season and as much as I can't wait to be able to sleep in, stay out, calm down, etc., I know I'm going to miss being on the water so much.

Decode: Digital Design Sensations

For this project we used analog to create a grid for our digital posters.  I wanted to use the geometries of digital artwork, found in pixels, printing, vectors, etc.  so I focused on the hard angles from my grid and used a white layer to create a window to see one of the pieces in the exhibit and all of the information.

Inspiration of Avril

So many things have been delightful lately.  I think because I'm getting less sleep with waking up at unheard hours for crew practice that I am just constantly overtired.  This, though, is not always a bad thing.   That overtired giddiness that we've all experienced is my constant state of mind. It actually makes me appreciate lots of little things that I find in my daily routine.  Do I really want to end up napping? Or would I rather stay awake and find everything hilarious and ironic?

For this week I have found inspiration in these photographs I found of different weather conditions.  I like the "natural compositions" created by Mama Nature herself.

I once saw a storm that was just in the clouds and it is still one of my favorite nights of nature.  The lightening beams horizantally and you feel like you're watching something disasterous take place just in the sky.

Inspirational Poster

Being an art student is fun.  Anyone think of any other words or quotes that could go with this??
